COVID-19 has affected everybody and for those stuck at home in lockdown, unable to work, you’ve probably thought to yourself:
‘Huh, maybe I should think of a different career path.’
Well, you’re not the only one, don’t worry!
Many people have been thinking about switching their careers and looking for something more ‘pandemic-proof’. In fact,
1 in 4 workers are planning to look for new career opportunities once the pandemic has finally subsided.
Nobody wants to be stuck in lockdown with no work or with a fear of losing their job. One of the industries that came out of lockdown relatively unscathed with a lot of job opportunities still available was the trades.
The building trades stayed working throughout the entire pandemic. Electricians, plumbers, painters, home renovators, and even HVAC specialists were kept busy, and some were even busier than ever before as people invested in upgrading their homes to make them more comfortable for lockdown life.
Today we’re going to take a quick look at why the building trades are a great career choice to pivot to if you’re looking to change up your career and keep working during difficult times like a pandemic.
So if you want guaranteed work that’s pandemic-proof, then take a glance at just how brilliant the skilled trade industry is.
The trades have definitely changed over the last year to deal with the effects and precautions of the coronavirus, but many aspects of the industry have stayed the same and thrived through the pandemic.
During the lockdown, people were stuck at home with their thoughts, frustrated children, remote work, and their house. When you’re stuck in the same place for a long time, you start to notice things that need improving, fixing, and updating.
So who do they go to?
The construction trades.
Whether it was new lighting fixtures, new flooring, landscaping, or even a complete home renovation, the pandemic brought in many home improvement jobs for the building trades, which kept construction companies going.
Apart from it being pandemic-proof, there are plenty of other great reasons to start working in a skilled trade. Here’s my top three:
The construction industry currently has a workforce shortage and there is a massive demand for skilled, motivated professionals.
This lack of skilled workers is one of the biggest threats to the industry, and it’s a threat that doesn’t seem to be going away anytime soon.
With the lack of skilled workers going into the trades, you'll easily find yourself in a position to train and work your way up in the construction industry.
The pandemic showed us all that the construction industry is an important industry for the economy. While other industries were shutting down throughout the pandemic, the construction industry couldn’t afford to pause while everything else stopped moving.
Trade professionals were allowed to keep working on projects and continue to push forward during the pandemic because of the need for construction, plumbing, and HVAC services.
The construction trades keep the modern world running, and if we paused the trades, we’d have issues with housing, electricity, plumbing, and so much more.
The construction industry wasn’t free from its own pandemic problems, it just adapted to new situations and evolved to continue working hard.
If another pandemic happens in the future, which it inevitably will, the construction industry will still move forward and find a way to come out okay, which is why it’s a great industry to get involved with if you’re thinking of changing your career.
Well, are you going to make join the #TheBigShift when it comes to your career? How has your construction company adapted to the pandemic?
