Your Website Can Look Fine and Still Have a Problem
When most of us check a website, we open it, click around and make sure everything seems to be working.
If it looks fine, we assume it is.
But AI and search systems don’t always experience a website the same way we do.
Your site can look perfectly normal to you and your customers, while something behind the scenes is making it harder for those systems to access or understand it.
It could be a website setting, a security rule, a hosting issue, or simply that some of the information about your business isn’t as clear as it should be.
And you’d probably never know just by looking at the site.
That’s what got me digging further into my own website.
Before worrying about “AI optimization,” I think there’s a much simpler question to answer first:
Can they get in and understand what your business does?
Being Online Doesn’t Necessarily Tell You the Whole Story
When most of us check a website, we open it, click around and make sure everything seems to be working.
If the pages load and the contact form works, we assume the site is fine.
But AI and search systems don’t always experience a website the same way we do.
Your site can look perfectly normal to you and your customers while something behind the scenes is making it harder for those systems to access or understand it.
It could be a website setting, a security rule, a hosting issue or simply that some of the information about your business isn’t as clear as it should be.
And you’d probably never know just by looking at the site.
That’s what got me digging further into my own website.
Before worrying about “AI optimization,” I think there’s a much more practical place to start.
If People Are Asking AI Who to Hire, What Does It Know About You?
Your website can help AI systems understand who you are, what you do and where you work.
It’s also one of the places where you control the information about your business.
That includes things like your services, your service area, your experience, your projects, your team and expertise, and the kinds of work you actually want more of.
But that only helps if the information is easy to access and easy to understand.
If something is getting in the way, or your website is too vague about what you do and where you work, it becomes harder for AI systems to understand your business properly.
That’s why the scan looks at more than just whether a website is technically online.
Access Is Only the First Step
Being accessible does not mean ChatGPT or another AI tool will recommend your company.
There’s much more to it than that.
There are many other things involved in how a business is understood online.
- Your website content matters.
- Your Google Business Profile matters.
- Your reviews and reputation matter.
- Information about your business across the web matters.
- The specificity and usefulness of your own website matter.
And the quality of your own website matters.
If your service pages are vague, your location isn’t clear or there isn’t much information about your actual experience and work, AI systems have less to work with.
The goal of the scan isn’t to pretend there’s some secret formula for getting recommended by ChatGPT.
It’s to show you what we can actually check, what we found and what may be worth improving.
